travel
Here’s what I brought along in my pack on a recent trip to Europe in the springtime. There are a few minor adjustments I would make.
Bags
- Main pack: Aer Travel Pack 3 X-Pac
- Day pack: Eddie Bauer packable backpack
- 4 Packing cubes: Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate Packing Cubes, 2 medium and 2 small
Comments and changes
- Aer internal organization is great
- Never used the day pack, took a fair amount of space, could use a more portable version
- Would like option of large cube instead of 2 medium
Clothing
- 1 pair of shoes: Nike Blazers low top, white
- 2 pairs of pants
- Outlier Slim Dungarees, gray
- Outlier something somethings, gray
- 5 t-shirts
- Proof 72-hour merino t-shirt, off-black
- Proof 72-hour merino t-shirt, army green
- Buck Mason t-shirt, white
- Buck Mason t-shirt, light gray
- Buck Mason t-shirt, black
- 1 sweatshirt: Mountain Warehouse merino, navy blue
- 1 long sleeve shirt: Everlane waffle shirt, off-white
- 1 flannel: Eddie Bauer
- 1 oxford: Everlane Japanese Slim Oxford, white
- 1 overshirt: Everlane Overshirt, olive green
- 5 pairs of underwear: Nike
- 2 pairs of boxers
- 5 pairs of socks: Nike crew
- 1 swimsuit: Bather
- Notable exclusions: shorts, rain jacket, hat
Changes and comments
- Outlier merino t-shirts in neutral colors would be a welcome addition. Merino wool is simply the way.
- I don’t like the color of the army green t-shirt. I would get it in a different color.
- Perhaps a different pair of shoes, although the white low top Blazers worked well enough for this trip.
- I would swap out the socks for a socks made of a better material, such as merino instead cotton
- Brought the right amount of stuff
- Could have used method to clean / dry clothes if wanted
- The overshirt was perfect for the weather, looked nice, had versatility, and was packable
Toiletries
- Contacts
- Travel size deoderant
- Weleda Skin food
- … I don’t feel like listing everything … had pretty standard stuff
Changes and comments
- Skin food saved my dry hands
- Tubes for soap, shampoo, conditioner
- Would be nice to have lasik so don’t need contacts
- Organization of toiletries is abysmal, throw it all in one toiletry bag
- Would like a better travel deoderant for size
- Perhaps try toothpaste pills instead of travel size toothpaste tube
Technology and Entertainment
- Cell phone: iPhone 12 mini
- Charger: Anker 735 Charger
- Portable charger: Anker Powercore III 20K mAh
- Earbuds: wired and wireless
- Earplugs
- Generic universal travel adapter
- Book: Kobo Clara HD
- Card deck
- Notebook / pen: Moleskine cahier and Pilot V2 retractable pen
- Portable speaker: Jawbone Jambox Mini
- Airtag in bag
- Notable exclusions: laptop or tablet
Changes and comments
- Didn’t really use card deck or notebook. Oh well. I would still bring these.
- Leaving laptop behind was the right move, although a tablet may have been a nice addition.
- Combination of charger and travel adapter sucked. Should have brought the Anker Nano II 65W charger instead of the Anker 735 because it’s less elongated, meaning it won’t fall out of outlets. Travel adapter didn’t hold charger well when plugged into outlets. I would opt for a travel adapter specific built for the outlets rather than a bulky universal adapter.
- A dedicated camera may have been cool for pics
- Would consider getting a different cell plan for international signal. Bummed off my partner’s cell phone service since the trip was short enough.
- Although the portable charger is on the larger size, its ample capacity gives me peace of mind that I can charge my cell phone while on the move. Plus it charges very fast and has both usb-c and usb-a. A workaround for not carrying a usb-a charger is to charge the portable charger using the usb-c port and then charging usb-a devices with the portable charger’s usb-a output.
Miscellanious
- Passport / travel wallet
- Waterbottle: Hydroflask 18oz
- Sunglasses
- Glasses (in case)
- Travel neck pillow
- Eye mask
Changes and comments
- Glasses are more of a risk averse travel item, just in case contacts bother my eyes or I run out of contacts. Could avoid if I get Lasik.
- Eye mask was great on the plane
- Travel neck pillow was overkill and took too much space.
